French Community

1958 · 20th century

The French Community was an association created by de Gaulle's constitution of 1958 to replace the French Union, offering colonies autonomy within a French framework. Guinea immediately chose independence instead, and within a few years most African members became independent, ending the French Empire in sub-Saharan Africa.
