Bu Njem

201 CE · 3rd century · Also known as Gholaia

Bu Njem, ancient Gholaia, is the site of a Roman fort in the Libyan desert south-east of Tripoli, built in 201 CE by a detachment of the Third Augustan Legion under Septimius Severus to control routes to the Fezzan and the Garamantes. Excavations have revealed the fort, baths and a large archive of ostraca, written potsherds recording daily military life, before its abandonment around 263.
