Burgan field
The Burgan field in south-eastern Kuwait is one of the largest oil fields in the world. Oil was struck there in 1938 by the Kuwait Oil Company, a British and American venture, and exports began in 1946, transforming Kuwait from a pearling and trading town into a wealthy oil state. Retreating Iraqi forces set its wells on fire in 1991.
