Burhanpur is a city on the Tapti river in Madhya Pradesh, India. Founded around 1400 by Nasir Khan of the Faruqi dynasty, it was the capital of the Khandesh Sultanate and, after Akbar's conquest of 1601, a major Mughal base for campaigns in the Deccan. Mumtaz Mahal died there in 1631, and the city was known for its cotton textiles and trade.
