Byeolmuban

1104 · 12th century

The Byeolmuban was a special army of the Korean kingdom of Goryeo, created in 1104 on the advice of Yun Gwan after defeats by the Jurchen. It combined cavalry, infantry and a corps of Buddhist monks and drew recruits from all classes. In 1107 Yun Gwan led it into the north-east and built nine fortresses, which were handed back to the Jurchen in 1109.
