Camaldolese

c. 1012– · 11th century · Also known as Camaldolese Benedictines, Camaldolese order

The Camaldolese are a congregation of Benedictine monks founded by St Romuald at Camaldoli in Tuscany around 1012. They combine communal monastic life with hermit communities devoted to solitude and prayer. In the 12th century they spread across Italy and to Sardinia, where the judges of Logudoro gave them the church of Saccargia.
