Caramansa

late 15th century · 15th century · Also known as Kwamena Ansa

Caramansa was a ruler on the Gold Coast, in present-day Ghana, with whom the Portuguese commander Diogo de Azambuja negotiated in January 1482 for permission to build a fortress at Elmina. Portuguese chronicles describe the ceremonial meeting and the chief's reluctant consent. The fort of São Jorge da Mina built there became the centre of Portuguese trade for gold on the coast.
