Caranus of Macedon

trad. 808 BCE · 9th century BCE

Caranus was, according to later Greek writers such as Theopompus and Diodorus, the founder of the Argead royal house of Macedon, a descendant of Heracles from Argos, traditionally dated to the 9th or 8th century BCE. Herodotus and Thucydides do not mention him and name Perdiccas I as founder, so he is generally regarded as a legendary figure added to lengthen the royal genealogy.
