Caratacus was a British chieftain, son of Cunobelinus of the Catuvellauni, who led resistance to the Roman invasion of 43 CE. After the fall of his homeland he continued the war among the Silures and Ordovices of Wales, until he was defeated around 50. He fled to the Brigantes, whose queen Cartimandua handed him to Rome, where Claudius spared his life.
