Cartimandua

fl. 43–69 CE · 1st century

Cartimandua was queen of the Brigantes of northern Britain in the 1st century CE and a client ruler of Rome. In 51 she handed over the fugitive British leader Caratacus to the Romans. Her divorce from her consort Venutius split the Brigantes, and when he rose against her in 69 Roman troops rescued her, after which the Romans conquered her kingdom.
