Cardigan, Wales
Cardigan is a market town in Ceredigion, west Wales, near the mouth of the River Teifi. Its castle, rebuilt in stone by Rhys ap Gruffydd, the Lord Rhys, was the scene of the first recorded eisteddfod in 1176. Contested between Welsh princes and Anglo-Norman lords, it later became an English royal castle, and the town gave its name to the county of Cardiganshire.
