Carolingian civil war

840–843 · 9th century

The Carolingian civil war (840–843) was fought among the sons of Emperor Louis the Pious over the Frankish empire after his death in 840. Lothair I, who claimed the whole empire, was defeated at Fontenoy in 841 by his brothers Louis the German and Charles the Bald, who confirmed their alliance in the Oaths of Strasbourg in 842. The Treaty of Verdun (843) divided the empire into three kingdoms, the roots of France and Germany.
