Caroline of Zweibrücken, known as the Great Landgravine, was the wife of Landgrave Louis IX of Hesse-Darmstadt. While her husband stayed mostly at his garrison town of Pirmasens, she managed the court at Darmstadt and made it a meeting place for writers of the age of sensibility, including Goethe, Herder and Johann Heinrich Merck. She arranged prominent marriages for her daughters, one of whom married the future Frederick William II of Prussia.
