Carrara

Carrara is a town in northern Tuscany at the foot of the Apuan Alps, famous for its white marble, quarried since Roman times. Michelangelo chose blocks there for his sculptures. Bought by the Malaspina in 1473, it formed with Massa the Duchy of Massa and Carrara until 1829, and its quarries remain among the largest in the world.
