Cato the Younger

95–46 BCE · 1st century BCE · Also known as Marcus Porcius Cato Uticensis

Cato the Younger (Marcus Porcius Cato) was a Roman senator and Stoic, great-grandson of Cato the Elder, famed for his rigid integrity and defence of the traditional Republic. He opposed Julius Caesar and sided with Pompey in the civil war. After Caesar's victory at Thapsus in 46 BCE he killed himself at Utica rather than accept Caesar's pardon, earning the name Uticensis and lasting fame as a republican martyr.
