César Vallejo

1892–1938 · 20th century

César Vallejo was a Peruvian poet, regarded as one of the great innovators of twentieth-century poetry in any language. Born in Santiago de Chuco in the northern Andes, he published Los heraldos negros in 1918 and the radically experimental Trilce in 1922, then lived in Paris from 1923. His later poems, published after his death, include Poemas humanos and España, aparta de mí este cáliz, written during the Spanish Civil War.
