José Carlos Mariátegui

1894–1930 · 20th century

José Carlos Mariátegui was a Peruvian journalist and political thinker, regarded as one of the founders of Latin American Marxism. After years in Europe, he founded the journal Amauta in 1926 and the Peruvian Socialist Party in 1928, arguing that socialism in Peru should build on indigenous communal traditions. His Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality (1928) remains a classic. He died in Lima at the age of 35.
