1005 · 11th century

The Chanyuan Treaty was a peace agreement concluded in 1005 between the Song Dynasty and the Khitan Liao dynasty. The Song agreed to pay annual tribute in silver and silk in return for peace along the northern frontier. It formalised a tributary relationship that brought long-lasting peace but left the northern territories in Liao hands.
