Charles Augustus, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach
Charles Augustus, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, ruled the duchy from 1775, first under his mother Anna Amalia's guidance. He brought Goethe to Weimar as friend and minister, and Herder and Schiller followed, making the small court the centre of German classicism. The Congress of Vienna raised him to grand duke, and in 1816 he granted one of Germany's first constitutions.
