Charlotte Amalie
Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the United States Virgin Islands, on the island of St Thomas. Founded by the Danish West India Company in the 1670s and named after the Danish queen in 1691, it had a fine natural harbour and became a free port and trading centre of the Danish West Indies, until Denmark sold the islands to the United States in 1917.
