Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Saint Thomas is an island of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, settled by the Danish West India Company in 1672. Its town of Charlotte Amalie, with a fine harbour, became the capital of the Danish West Indies and a free port and a hub of the Atlantic slave trade, receiving captives shipped from the Brandenburg forts on the Gold Coast. Denmark sold it to the United States in 1917.
