Saint Croix
Saint Croix is the largest of the United States Virgin Islands. It was contested by the Dutch, English and Spanish before France took it in 1650; the Knights of Malta held it briefly from 1651 to 1665. The French abandoned it in the 1690s and sold it to Denmark in 1733, which built sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans. The United States bought it in 1917.
