Saint Cuthbert
Saint Cuthbert was a Northumbrian monk and bishop of Lindisfarne, the most venerated saint of northern England. After Viking raids his community carried his relics to Chester-le-Street and in 995 to Durham, where his shrine became the centre of the cathedral. The lands and privileges of the community of Saint Cuthbert passed to the bishops of Durham and underpinned their later palatine power.
