Chongzhen Emperor

1611–1644 · 17th century · Also known as Zhu Youjian

The Chongzhen Emperor (1611–1644) was the last emperor of the Ming dynasty, reigning from 1627. Inheriting an empire beset by famine, peasant rebellions and Manchu invasions, he executed or dismissed many ministers and generals, including the commander Yuan Chonghuan. When Li Zicheng's rebels took Beijing in April 1644, he hanged himself on Coal Hill behind the Forbidden City.
