Christina of Lorraine

1565–1637 · 17th century

Christina of Lorraine was a granddaughter of Catherine de' Medici who married Ferdinando I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, in 1589, a match that balanced Spanish influence with ties to France. After the early death of her son Cosimo II she shared the regency for her grandson Ferdinando II from 1621. She is also remembered as the recipient of Galileo's Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina of 1615 on science and Scripture.
