Classis Alexandrina

The Classis Alexandrina was the Roman fleet based at Alexandria, created under Augustus after the annexation of Egypt in 30 BCE. It protected the grain ships sailing to Rome, patrolled the eastern Mediterranean and the Nile, and supported the army in Egypt. It was one of the main provincial fleets of the Roman Empire.
