Coatzacoalcos River
The Coatzacoalcos River rises in the mountains of Oaxaca and flows north through southern Veracruz, Mexico, to the Gulf of Mexico at the port city of Coatzacoalcos. Its floodplain was the heartland of the early Olmec civilisation, whose first great centre, San Lorenzo, stood on a plateau above the river from about 1400 BCE. Today its lower course is lined with oil and petrochemical industries.
