Companion cavalry

The Companion cavalry, or hetairoi, was the elite heavy cavalry of the Macedonian army, recruited from the Macedonian aristocracy. Under Alexander the Great it delivered the decisive charges at battles such as Gaugamela. The Seleucid Empire maintained a similar elite cavalry unit modelled on the Macedonian tradition.
