Copper plate inscriptions
Copper plate inscriptions are legal records engraved on copper sheets, used in India to document royal land grants. In the Gupta Empire they recorded grants of land to Brahmin priests and Buddhist monasteries. Such grants functioned as a mechanism of tax administration, delegating revenue collection and local governance to religious institutions.
