Cortes of Coimbra (1385)

1385 · 14th century

The Cortes of Coimbra was the assembly of clergy, nobles and town representatives that met at Coimbra in March and April 1385, during the succession crisis after the death of Ferdinand I. Persuaded by the jurist João das Regras, it rejected the claims of Beatrice and her husband John I of Castile and on 6 April acclaimed John, Master of Aviz, as King John I of Portugal.
