João das Regras
João das Regras was a Portuguese jurist trained in Roman law at Bologna. At the Cortes of Coimbra in 1385 he argued that the throne was vacant and that the rival claimants had no valid right, persuading the assembly to elect John, Master of Aviz, as King John I. He then served the new king as chancellor and helped to shape royal law.
