João Afonso de Aveiro
João Afonso de Aveiro was a Portuguese explorer who reached the kingdom of Benin in the 1480s. His visit led to formal diplomatic and commercial relations between Portugal and Benin under Oba Ozolua. The Portuguese trade that followed brought brass manillas into Benin, supplying metal for the Benin Bronzes.
