Corvus
The corvus was a boarding bridge with a spike at its end, used by the Roman navy during the First Punic War. It allowed Roman soldiers to board and fight on Carthaginian ships as if on land. The device helped Rome overcome the superior seamanship of the Punic Empire's navy.
