Cotubanamá
Cotubanamá was the last paramount cacique of Higüey in eastern Hispaniola. After a period of peace, Spanish tribute demands and violence led to war, and he led Taíno resistance against the forces of Governor Nicolás de Ovando in 1502–1504. He was captured on Saona Island and hanged in Santo Domingo, ending the independence of the last Taíno chiefdom of the island.
