Council of Arles

314 · 4th century · Also known as Synod of Arles (314)

The Council of Arles was a church council summoned by Constantine the Great to Arles in southern Gaul in 314 to settle the Donatist dispute in North Africa. It ruled against the Donatists and issued canons on church discipline. Among the bishops present were three from Britain, from London, York and probably Lincoln, the earliest firm evidence of an organised church in Roman Britain.
