Cumaean Sibyl

Also known as Sibyl of Cumae

The Cumaean Sibyl was the prophetess who presided over the oracle of Apollo at Cumae, the Greek colony near Naples. Roman tradition said she sold the Sibylline Books to King Tarquin, and in Virgil's Aeneid she guides Aeneas through the underworld. A long trapezoidal gallery cut into the rock at Cumae has been identified as her cave.
