Dai Nihonshi

1657–1906 · 17th century · Also known as Great History of Japan

The Dai Nihonshi, 'Great History of Japan', is a history of Japan in classical Chinese begun in 1657 by Tokugawa Mitsukuni, lord of the Mito domain, and completed only in 1906. Modelled on Chinese dynastic histories, it covers the emperors from Jimmu to the 14th century, and its stress on loyalty to the imperial line, the work of the Mito school, helped inspire the movement that overthrew the shogunate in 1868.
