Daijō-kan

689–1885 · 7th century · Also known as Great Council of State (Japan)

The Daijō-kan, or Great Council of State, was the supreme organ of government in ritsuryō Japan, set up under the Taihō Code of 701 and earlier codes. Headed by the chancellor and the ministers of the left and right, it supervised eight ministries and the provincial governors. Its power faded under the Fujiwara regents and the shogunates, though it formally survived until 1885.
