Fujiwara clan

Also known as Fujiwara family

The Fujiwara clan was a Japanese aristocratic family descended from Nakatomi no Kamatari, who received the name Fujiwara in 669. By marrying daughters into the imperial line, its leaders dominated the court as regents (sesshō and kampaku) from the 9th to the 11th century, reaching their peak under Fujiwara no Michinaga. Their regency is a defining feature of the Heian period.
