Dakota people
The Dakota are a Siouan-speaking Indigenous people, one of the main divisions of the Oceti Sakowin, or Seven Council Fires, often called the Sioux. The eastern Dakota, or Santee, lived around the upper Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, where they hunted, fished and gathered wild rice. After the Dakota War of 1862 in Minnesota many were expelled to reservations further west, and Dakota communities live today in the United States and Canada.
