Deerfield, Massachusetts

Deerfield is a town in the Connecticut River valley of western Massachusetts, settled by English colonists in the 1670s. It was a frontier outpost in the wars with New France, and on 29 February 1704 a French and Native raiding party destroyed much of the village, killing 56 people and marching more than 100 captives to Canada. Some of the captives stayed permanently among the Mohawk at Kahnawake.
