Kahnawake

Also known as Caughnawaga

Kahnawake is a Mohawk community on the south shore of the St Lawrence opposite Montreal, in Quebec. It grew from a Jesuit mission founded in 1667 that drew Catholic Mohawks and other Iroquois from New York, among them Kateri Tekakwitha. Its people became famous in the 20th century as ironworkers on the skyscrapers and bridges of New York and other cities.
