Dhvanyaloka

9th century · 9th century

The Dhvanyaloka ('Light on Suggestion') is a Sanskrit treatise on poetics by the Kashmiri critic Anandavardhana, written in the 9th century under the Utpala dynasty. It argues that suggestion (dhvani) and the evocation of emotional states (rasa) are the soul of poetry. With Abhinavagupta's commentary it became one of the founding texts of Indian aesthetic theory.
