Domingo Martínez de Irala was a Basque conquistador who came to the Río de la Plata with Pedro de Mendoza and became the dominant figure of early Paraguay. Elected governor by the settlers of Asunción, he deposed Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1544 and ruled the colony for most of the period until his death, founding it on Guaraní alliances, encomiendas and mixed marriages.
