Person
Dominique Mbonyumutwa
Dominique Mbonyumutwa was a Rwandan Hutu politician and sub-chief. On 1 November 1959 he was attacked by young Tutsi activists, and false rumours of his death set off the violence against Tutsi chiefs that began the Rwandan Revolution. After the Gitarama declaration of January 1961 he became the provisional first president of the Republic of Rwanda, before Grégoire Kayibanda.
