Grégoire Kayibanda

1924–1976 · 20th century

Grégoire Kayibanda was the first President of Rwanda, from 1962 to 1973. A Hutu journalist and leader of the Parmehutu party, he co-wrote the Hutu Manifesto of 1957 and led the revolution that overthrew the Tutsi monarchy. His government favoured the Hutu majority, and repeated violence drove many Tutsi into exile. He was overthrown by Juvénal Habyarimana in 1973 and died in detention.
