Gregor Mendel

1822–1884 · 19th century

Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian friar and scientist from Austrian Silesia who became abbot of St Thomas's Abbey in Brno, Moravia. Through experiments on pea plants in the monastery garden between 1856 and 1863 he discovered the basic laws of heredity, published in 1866. His work was neglected until its rediscovery in 1900, after which he was recognised as the founder of genetics.
