Brno
Brno is the second-largest city of the Czech Republic and the historic capital of Moravia. A Přemyslid castle stood there by the 11th century, when it became the seat of an appanage duchy, and the town received its privileges in 1243. Its Špilberk Castle later served as a notorious Habsburg prison, and Gregor Mendel carried out his experiments on heredity at the city's Augustinian abbey.
