1971 · 20th century · Also known as Frente Amplio

The Broad Front, or Frente Amplio, is a left-wing coalition of parties in Uruguay founded in 1971. Banned under the military dictatorship of 1973–1985, it governed from 2005 to 2020 under Tabaré Vázquez and José Mujica and returned to office in 2025 under Yamandú Orsi. Its governments expanded social programmes and legalised same-sex marriage and cannabis.
