Fructuoso Rivera

1784–1854 · 19th century

Fructuoso Rivera was a Uruguayan caudillo and soldier who became the first constitutional president of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in 1830. A veteran of Artigas's struggles and the war against Brazil, he founded the Colorado party, and his rivalry with Manuel Oribe and the Blancos led to the Guerra Grande of 1839 to 1851. He served as president again from 1839 to 1843.
